Last reviewed October 17, 2026 · Official sources linked throughout
Suffolk County's septic grants are competitive, and applications are funded in priority order. Here's how the county ranks them and how to check your address. [source]
Priority order
- Catastrophic failure anywhere in Suffolk County (as defined in the SIP rules).
- Non-catastrophic failure anywhere in Suffolk County.
- Priority Critical Areas: non-failing systems within the 0–2 year groundwater travel time to surface waters (groundwater priority area 1 in the Subwatersheds Wastewater Plan), or within 1,000 feet of enclosed water bodies.
- Critical Areas: non-failing systems within the 2–25 year groundwater travel time (priority area 2).
- Everything else: outside the 0–25 year travel time (priority area 3).
Within that order, grants are issued as completed applications are scored and received. Documented failures need proof such as photos or service receipts. [source]
